Chatham Lab-Grown

Chatham grows ruby crystals in a six-month process that we’ve refined over decades. We start with a naturally mined seed of fine Burmese ruby. We create the perfect environment rich in chromium to give our crystals a vivid red color. The conditions have to be precisely right: We once lost an entire year’s growth of ruby due to a 0.001% trace of another element in the platinum we use to make our crucibles.

When everything is right, we are able to grow vivid red crystals with exceptional clarity. When we cut the crystals, we cut away 80% of the rough to give you faceted rubies that are essentially flawless and highly saturated in color. The price difference between the finest lab-grown and mined ruby of the same size and quality can be as much as $100,000 per carat!

Best of all, we cut our rubies in a wide variety of shapes that are almost impossible to find in mined rubies. We think the quality and beauty of our lab-grown rubies make them a better choice than mined rubies. But visit a Chatham retailer and compare the two side-by-side and decide for yourself.

About Rubies

Rubies are the gems of intense emotion, worn by queens and warriors. They are gems of passion, fire and power. Throughout most of history, rubies have been the most valuable gems. In Sanskrit, ruby is ratnaraj, “King of Gems.” In the Bible, wisdom and virtue are said to have a price “above rubies.”

Fine rubies glow like coals, with red fluorescence making them particularly vivid in sunlight. Rubies are very rare: it’s almost impossible to mine flawless rubies and many mined rubies are enhanced with heat and fracture filling to improve their appearance.

Ruby is most commonly found in oval and cushion shapes. Other shapes may be difficult to find in sizes above a carat. They are durable and easy to care for with a hardness second to only diamond.
